The curriculum covers a wide spectrum of Chemical Engineering subjects and is revised continuously to meet the growing needs of the industry. The department has a team of committed faculty members, who inculcate in the students conceptual foundations coupled with practical insights. The width and depth of courses is complemented by academia-industry interface imparting uniqueness to our post-graduate programs. The department has therefore emerged as the foremost center of excellence in Chemical Engineering education in the country.

Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science is to hone graduates with the basics of the subject and also impart specialized skills, so that they learn to tackle engineering problems from a broader perspective and contribute positively to the chemical industry in India.

To achieve these goals, the department seeks to instill in its students:

An overall perspective which helps the student to view an engineering problem in context to the local and global scenario.

Technical skills which require a thorough understanding of the core areas of Chemical Engineering.

Innovative and analytical skills, which help the students, organize necessary information about the system of interest. These in turn leads to proper identification of the problem followed by creative and feasible solutions.

In addition, the department also strives to inculcate integrity and ethics among its students and an ability to fit into different work environments.

Professional maturity of the students is also enhanced through a number of departmental group activities, which enable them to interact successfully and contribute as a member of a team.

About the Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering was started in 1943 as a wing of the Division of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The Chemical Engineering wing earned the full status of a department in 1947, as the Department of Chemical Technology. In 1961, it was renamed as the Department of Chemical Engineering with an affiliation to the Faculty of Engineering. Since then, our department has honed more than 400 chemical engineers and published around 600 papers in journals of repute. It now offers programs leading to the M.E., M.Sc. (Engg, Res), and Ph.D. degrees.

Our department is committed to providing its students a high quality and modern education on par with international standards. It now has eleven teaching staff and two scientific officers. The department at present has twenty two M.E., thirteen M.Sc. and fourteen Ph.D. students.

The Institute has one of the finest libraries of the country and an excellent computer center. Our department has several PCs and workstations, which are linked by LAN to main frame computers. There are excellent facilities for experimental work.

Extracurricular activities such as seminars, picnics, and social get-togethers are organized by the Chemical Engineering Association

Degrees offered

The department attracts graduates from premier institutes and universities all over India rigorously screened through entrance tests and/or interviews. The M. E. programme is offered to enable students to get a handle on all the tenets of chemical engineering. It comprises of a year of advanced instruction followed by a semester long project.

Those interested in pursuing research immediately after their B. E. or M. Sc. in physics, chemistry or biology join the two year long M. Sc. (Engg.) programme. After qualifying in the research training programme and comprehensive examination, they submit their thesis. The thesis is evaluated by two external examiners, and is defended by the candidate. Students graduating from these courses enter the corporate world or take up doctoral assignments.

Competent post-graduates inclined to pursue research work in chemical engineering are selected through interviews as Ph.D. aspirants. They undergo research training programme and a comprehensive examination to qualify as a research scholar. A Ph.D. candidate makes an original contribution to the to the field of investigation. This is often reflected through journal publications and development of new products and/or processes. It normally takes five years to complete and defend the work, after which they take up key R&D positions in industries, scientific organizations or academia.

The department also has students under the External Registration Programme sponsored by industries and scientific organizations. Facilities in the Department:

INSTRUMENTS

The department has state-of-art facilities for carrying out experimental research. To name a few, we have Biostat-E-fermenter, Minimax polymer evaluation unit, Pulsed ruby holographic laser, Laser-based particle size analyser GALAI, Humidity chambers, Haake viscometer, Rheometer, etc. We have facilities to carry out analysis using UV-visible and Atomic absorption spectrophotometers, and separation using HPLC, GC, etc. The department has a workshop for fabrication of equipments.

COMPUTER FACILITIES

We have a number of workstations, an Image Processing System and many Pentiums to support our computational needs. Besides, the department is connected to the Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (the largest academic computing facility in Asia) that provides nearly unlimited computing power. Students work with advanced software packages like CFX, MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, etc. The department has a library as a branch of the J.R.D Tata Memorial Central Library of IISc. We also access the National Centre for Science Information for computerized databases like Compendex. The department has a website, and most of the students and faculty members maintain their homepages on Internet.

Industry Interaction

The department's link with the industry is umbilical. For example, our faculty members are currently involved in the following industrial consultancy projects:

Model for product quality in cigarette manufacturing Modeling and control of ITM Drier of ITC's Bangalore project

Biobeneficiation of bauxite for abrasive and refractory applications

In addition, work on several Department of Science and Technology sponsored projects are also in progress.

Continuing Education Program

The department is a front runner in training professionals from the industries through its External Registration Programme. Some of the participating industries are BHEL, Reliance Industries Ltd., etc. The department takes up industrial projects under Sponsored Schemes, Special Research Programmes and programmes like IISc-ISRO Joint Research. Faculty members collaborate extensively with the Centre for Applications of S & T in Rural Areas (ASTRA). Industries are also represented in our Annual In-house Symposia, in which the delegates get a first-hand account of our current research areas.

I worked on Emulsion Free Liquid Membrane and their application to extraction of copper and chromium.

I have been working on the extraction of amino acids using liquid membrane process. A new reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the equilibrium behaviour of reaction of amino acid with D2EHPA. A mathematical analysis is done to characterize the simultaneous bulk and interfacial reaction in the membrane for the first time, which gave rise to counterintuitive results. Modeling of simultaneous extraction and stripping of amino acids in a hollow fiber module is carried out.

SKILLS:I possess good time management skills and can work well independently and as a team member. The masters and doctoral experience has honed my problem solving skills. I have considerable experience with Instrumental Methods of Analysis and Numerical Computation.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:

Understanding the behaviour of thin film of confined liquids is of fundamental interest because of their connection with lubrication, adhesion, adsorption etc. Experimental and simulation data reported in literature show an oscillation in local density and solvation force indicating a layer like transition of the liquid with gap thickness. The present study uses molecular simulations to investigate the structural and mechanical properties of nanofilms confined between rough surfaces in order to compare them with similar properties obtained for smooth surfaces.        Advisor : Dr. K.G. Project: Polymeric Compatibilizers for Polystyrene-Rubber Blends: Synthesis, Characterization & Application

Polystyrene is a well known commodity thermoplastic but its practical uses are limited by its highly brittle character. This brittleness can be significantly reduced by polyalloying, where elastomeric polymers such as rubber are dispersed in polystyrene matrix. For better adhesion of two phases some binding additive called compatibilizer has to be introduced. By statistical analysis optimum percentage of compatibilizer required for polystyrene-rubber blend can be found. By FTIR, NMR, GPC and chemical analysis the compatiblizer can be analyzed whereas impact testing, tensile testing and SEM photographs help to find mechanical properties of the resulting material.
